The Red Silk Thread

The Red Silk Thread

A private year-long correspondence for thoughtful people making sense of a changing world and their place within it.

Do you remember receiving a real letter?

Perhaps one of those thin blue airmail envelopes, the paper almost translucent, a stamp from somewhere far away, handwriting you recognised before you had even opened it.

Maybe you had a pen pal. Maybe you remember carrying the letter inside, putting the kettle on, finding somewhere to sit and letting another person’s world enter yours for a while.

I loved that feeling.

As a child, I wrote letters constantly. I grew up meeting people from many different countries, and at one point I was writing to around eighty people around the world. I had a pen pal in France whom I eventually went to stay with, and she came to stay with me. I collected the stamps too, tiny windows onto places I had not yet seen.

Later, I wanted to become a foreign correspondent. I studied politics, travelled for several years and wrote home from places such as Bogotá and Manila, trying to describe not only what was happening, but what it felt like to be there.

I never became a foreign correspondent in the conventional sense.

But perhaps I never completely stopped being one.

And now I find myself returning to letters.

None of it is designed to fill your life.

I hope it creates a little more space inside it.

Why Letters? Why Now?

I do not want to recreate the past. Most of this correspondence will travel differently now.

I want to recover something that letters once gave us: anticipation, attention, intimacy, and the feeling that something had arrived which was worth sitting down with.

We have never communicated more, and yet genuine correspondence is becoming strangely rare.

We live in a world changing at extraordinary speed. AI is part of ordinary life. The ways we work, lead, create, learn and relate are shifting around us. Political and cultural certainties feel less certain. Some possibilities are opening while other things seem to be moving backwards.

There is excitement in that. There is fear too.

And beneath all the commentary and analysis lies a question that interests me more and more:

What is it like to be human while all of this is happening?

How do we remain open to what is emerging without losing ourselves in the noise?

How do we make room for thought and feeling, for hope and grief, for beauty and uncertainty?

How do we stay close to the life we are actually living while the world keeps accelerating around us?

That is where The Red Silk Thread begins.

Not another programme to complete or a community to keep up with.

A little more space

Perhaps you feel the world speeding up and do not want your inner life to speed up with it.

Perhaps you are questioning how you want to live, work, lead or contribute as the landscape around you changes.

Perhaps you have lived enough to know that the next chapter will not necessarily be found by doing more of what came before.

Perhaps you are curious rather than certain, and want somewhere to stay close to the questions that matter.

The invitation is simply to spend a year in correspondence with me, staying close to the questions that arise as the world changes and our lives change with it.

There is no curriculum, no homework, no goals you need to arrive with and nothing you are expected to achieve.

The Rhythm of

The Red Silk Thread

A Red Silk Letter

First Friday of every month. A longer letter opening an inquiry that matters.

Two Field Notes

Shorter observations, fragments, photographs and questions in the weeks between letters.

Occasional Voice Notes

When something feels better spoken than written.

Seasonal Conversations

Optional online gatherings around questions moving through the correspondence.

Private Archive

Letters, field notes, voice notes and seasonal reflections gathered in one place.

The times for online gatherings will vary across the year, so correspondents in different parts of the world have opportunities to join.

Dates will be shared well in advance. The conversations will not routinely be recorded. Instead, I will share a short reflection afterwards for those who could not be there.

I do not want all of this to exist inside a screen.

The Red Silk Letters, Field Notes, voice notes, seasonal reflections and private archive will be delivered digitally, with the same care and attention I would give to something physical.

But the founding correspondence itself will begin differently.

A letter from me will arrive through your door.

And from time to time, something else may find its way through the post.

I would rather leave room for surprise than turn it into another promised deliverable.

The physical world still matters

This is slow correspondence rather than constant connectivity.

You are welcome to write back

If something stirs in you, a thought, a memory, a disagreement, a question, you are always welcome to write back.

You may reply once in the whole year, often, or not at all.

I read the responses that arrive, although I cannot promise to reply personally to every one. From time to time, I may write back when something particularly invites a response.

There is no expectation of immediacy, on either side.

Sometimes, with permission, I may weave a question or perspective from one correspondent into what follows.

A thought from one part of the world may illuminate something being lived in another.

That is the Thread.

A line running quietly between lives.

A short note from me

I have spent much of my life observing, listening, asking questions and trying to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

As a writer, traveller and leadership advisor, my work has taken me across countries, organisations, cultures and different chapters of my own life.

The Red Silk Thread brings those worlds together: the world outside us, the life within us, and the questions that connect the two.

Perhaps you can already imagine it.

A letter waiting.
A little more room to think and feel.
A thread running quietly through the year.

If you feel the thread gently pulling you, come and walk by my side.

The Founding Year

The Red Silk Thread will begin with a founding year of correspondents.

The founding rate will be €29 a month, with a minimum three-month commitment.

After the first three months, you can cancel at any time.

Your founding rate will remain the same for your first year.

Nothing to pay yet
Register your interest first.

I am currently gathering registrations of interest before the correspondence officially begins.

If you would like to be among the first correspondents, register below.

When the Thread is ready to begin, I will write to you with the opening date and an invitation to join.

Registering your interest does not commit you to joining.
